In the age of video conferencing and open-plan layouts, acoustic privacy is the #1 requested feature in office fit-outs. However, “soundproof” is a technical myth—acoustics is actually about Sound Reduction Indices, measured in Decibels (dB).

Here is how Bell Build calculates, installs, and verifies the right wall for the right room.

Understanding the WSRI Rating

The WSRI (Weighted Sound Reduction Index) tells us how much sound a partition stops. Because the decibel scale is logarithmic, a 10dB increase represents a 50% perceived reduction in noise.

30dB - 35dB (Standard) Normal speech can be heard and understood through the wall. Suitable for general dividing walls where privacy is not a priority.
40dB - 45dB (Professional): Loud speech can be heard but not understood. This is the "Industry Sweet Spot" for standard meeting rooms.
50dB (High Privacy): Loud speech is virtually inaudible. Essential for Boardrooms, HR offices, and Legal consulting rooms.

Which Wall for Which Room?

Room Type Target dB Bell Build Construction Method
Open Plan Zones 30dB Single-stud, standard 12.5mm plasterboard.
Meeting Rooms 45dB Twin-layer "Soundbloc" board + high-density mineral wool.
The Boardroom 50dB Twin-frame (staggered stud) + acoustic mastic at all junctions.
Data Centre Plant 55dB High-mass fire boards + specialized acoustic dampening quilts.

The "Flanking Path" Warning

A wall is only as good as its weakest point. You can invest in a $55\text{dB}$ wall, but sound will "leak" if these three areas aren't engineered correctly:

The Ceiling Void Sound travels over the wall through the gap above the suspended ceiling. We install acoustic baffles or extend the partition to the structural soffit.
The Floor Void In offices with raised access floors, sound travels under the wall. We install "Fire & Acoustic Barriers" beneath the floor track.
The "Socket Leak" Electrical sockets cut into both sides of a wall create a hollow path for sound. We use staggered socket positions and acoustic putty pads.

Speech Privacy vs. Sound Absorption

Sound Insulation (dB) Keeping sound inside or outside the room (The Wall).
Sound Absorption (Class A-E) Stopping echoes and reverberation within the room (The Finish).
The Bell Build Edge We combine our Specialist Dry Lining (Insulation) with our Bespoke Joinery (Acoustic Slatted Panelling) to create a space that is both private and acoustically "warm."
